After Cannon fodder Gong started farming, he had HE with the cold male protagonist (CFGF) - c2.1
Moving next door to the hero
~
The color drained from Old Jiang's face. He hadn't expected his usually unremarkable second grandson to be so sharp-witted now.
"None of it was provided by you, nor did you contribute to their care..."
"Is that so? Then return to us all the harvest we've labored for all these years." Jiang Baiye remained composed, but his words choked Old Jiang.
Old Jiang wanted to dismiss them quickly to avoid the prying eyes of the villagers who had gathered to witness the spectacle and pass judgment.
Suppressing his frustration, Old Jiang reluctantly converted the family's two-hundred-jin pigs, nine chickens, and seven ducks into silver coins, along with an additional two hundred Wen, and handed it over.
"You can stay in that old house on the back mountain. Clean it up, and it will still be suitable for living. There's half an acre of land available. If you plan to farm, you can use the tools from here. You can even borrow cattle, but considering your laziness..."
Before he could finish his admonishment, a composed voice interrupted him, "Father, mother, please go and gather our usual bedding, clothes, wooden basins, bowls, chopsticks, pots, and utensils."
Even the few villagers standing outside the low wall were taken aback, as if they were witnessing a different Jiang Baiye. Jiang Dazhu and his wife were also perplexed, but they complied. After experiencing the cold treatment, they couldn't resist making a scene.
In their previous life, they had also resorted to airing their grievances in front of the entire village. They were driven by anger and didn't seek anything more, resulting in being forced to separate from the main family without receiving their rightful share or any silver.
With this memory in mind, Jiang Baiye grabbed the largest basket from the fragrant kitchen and headed straight to the nearby vegetable garden.
Cabbages, radishes, spinach, and other seasonal green vegetables were lush, plump, and succulent. Usually, they could only savor a small portion of fresh produce. But now, Jiang Baiye was like an unstoppable machine, vigorously plucking the vegetables.
Witnessing this, He Shi and their daughter Jiang Ling'er, who had been hiding in the house, couldn't help but rush out. "Stop picking! If you keep going, there won't be anything left, Second! Don't you care about your son? He's gone mad!"
Jiang Baiye's smile took on a peculiar tone. "Old Jiang Ye, there must be at least forty or fifty taels of silver at home, with at least ten taels reserved from our second house. If we were to seek judgment from the villagers, wouldn't your conscience ache at only offering us four hundred Wen?"
The bystanders gasped in disbelief. Forty or fifty taels of silver?!
The Jiang family's wealth and background were unexpectedly substantial. Considering the old man Jiang's attitude and the fact that they had to support the eldest grandson's education, everyone had assumed there were only a few taels of silver at most. They had believed that the division of the family assets was fair to the second branch.
Now, four hundred Wen seemed utterly insignificant compared to the reported forty or fifty taels of silver!
Old man Jiang's face turned completely dark. "What absurdity are you spouting?"
"Or perhaps we can excavate the corner of the house and let everyone witness whether I am speaking nonsense," Jiang Baiye declared with conviction.
Old man Jiang grew anxious. How could he know about the hidden stash? And the accuracy of the amount—did he steal it?
The group of villagers observed Old Man Jiang's reaction and instantly grasped the truth. Their attention then shifted to Jiang Baiye, who simply smiled and exited the vegetable garden without uttering another word.
All of a sudden, a tinge of sympathy arose within them for this boy who was known for his penchant for cockfighting, dog-walking, and causing trouble.
Initially, they held a rather unfavorable view of the second son of the Jiang family. Compared to Jiang Yueming, who had been admitted to Tongsheng ( T/N- a candidate who has not yet passed the county level imperial exam) in the first year, this boy seemed less promising. Thus, it was understandable for old man Jiang to display bias.
Now, they suddenly realised that everything was too prejudiced...
While these thoughts circulated in their minds, Jiang Baiye swiftly placed a large, weighty basket of vegetables onto the wheelbarrow and securely fastened everything with ropes. His actions were precise and efficient, as if he were eager to depart without delay.
Despite Old Man Jiang's callousness and his desire to drive them away, witnessing Jiang Baiye's lack of sentimentality or even his lack of pleading stirred discomfort within him.
"Now that the family has completely split, if you cause any trouble outside in the future, don't even think we'll come to your aid!"
Jiang Baiye paused, "Who exactly committed those deeds, is it truly unclear to you, Jiang Ye?"
At that crucial moment, he chose not to create a spectacle, not to voice his grievances, and not to silently bear the injustices. Instead, he chose to leave with a single cryptic remark, leaving everyone with endless possibilities to ponder.
Before Old Man Jiang could utter another word, Jiang Baiye let out a whistle. "Big Yellow, Little Red, let's go!"
From the far corner of the yard, a coyote-like dog with sleek, glossy fur and a robust rooster emerged. They obediently trailed behind him, almost as if they were guided by an unseen spiritual bond.
To everyone's astonishment, as the plump and beautiful rooster made its departure, a hen engrossed in pecking the ground hurriedly trailed behind. Even the recently hatched chicks obediently followed their mother, emitting cheerful chirps along the way.
Jiang Baiye assumed the role of an animal leader, his posture upright as he pushed a wheelbarrow, leading his parents away without casting a glance back.
It took the old man Jiang quite a while to regain his composure, and he leaped in fury, exclaiming, "You rotten boy! Those chickens and watchdog are mine!"
"When you have transferred the land and property titles, then give us a call," Jiang Baiye waved his hand confidently, leaving many villagers who had eagerly gathered to witness the spectacle secretly astounded.
Was this really the same intimidating and somber boy from the Jiang family?
