Moving next door to the hero
~
Regarding the document for the family separation, Old Man Jiang had not taken it seriously, fearing that Jiang Baiye, whom he regarded as a good-for-nothing and a village bully, would disrupt his eldest grandson's imperial examinations. This was why the second son's family had resisted leaving.
Initially, the villagers also viewed the second son's family as shameless parasites, like blood-sucking insects, and thus had been pointing fingers at them to depart.
However, observing Jiang Baiye's lively and relieved demeanor, as if he had shed a heavy burden, even Jiang Dazhu and his wife followed suit, leaving the villagers utterly bewildered.
Old Man Jiang and the eldest son's family had seemingly achieved success, yet they were left feeling deeply frustrated, harboring an indescribable sense of regret. They couldn't help but question whether allowing the second family to leave had been a mistaken decision.
Lee Shi quickly reminded Old Man Jiang about the potential troubles Jiang Baiye might cause in the future and how it could negatively impact Yueming's chances of passing the imperial examination.
Instantly, Old Man Jiang regained his awareness and realized that simply separating the family might not be enough. He believed that they needed to sever all ties and completely cut off their relationship with Jiang Baiye to prevent him from bringing harm to the entire family.
Carrying a heap of belongings from Old Jiang's house in the village, Jiang Baiye and his family made their way to a few thatched huts located in the back mountain. Along the journey, many villagers who were returning from the fields for lunch were surprised to see the family. Upon learning about their actions, the news quickly spread like wildfire. The villagers couldn't comprehend what had prompted the family's sudden change of heart. Wasn't it just a while ago that they had wanted to die at Old Jiang's house?
"Do they have some ulterior motives?"
"Quick, keep a close watch on the vegetables in the garden and the chickens and ducks at home. We can't let them steal from us!"
As Jiang Baiye approached the few thatched houses where he had lived during his previous life, his attention was immediately drawn to a brick house adjacent to the thatched ones. The brick house, although in a dilapidated state, held significance as it was constructed by Lu Lizhi's grandfather, who had served as the Village Head of Qingshui Village when it was still in its early stages of development.
Tragically, Lu Lizhi's grandfather passed away due to illness on the very day of Lu Lizhi's birth. This unfortunate event, coupled with rumors circulating in the village, led to Lu Lizhi being labeled as unlucky. If Jiang Baiye's memory served him correctly, Lu Lizhi recently broke off his engagement with the daughter of the current Lizheng family.
In this typical narrative pattern, the male protagonist faces adversity and eventually rises to glory through counterattacks. It's a common trend in stories where the protagonist starts off in a pitiful state but gradually achieves success.
However, with such a person in the book to compare, Jiang Baiye the "cannon fodder", had nothing left. Although, the well water did not violate the river water (their paths didn't affect each other/minded their own business) in the previous life and Jiang Baiye's death had nothing to do with Lu Lizhi, but thinking of the content in the book, Jiang Baiye couldn't help but shudder.
bang!
Suddenly, a loud bang of the closing door disrupted Jiang Baiye's thoughts. He caught a glimpse of a gray-white figure swaying through the door crack before vanishing.
On the other side of the door, Lu Lizhi listened to the footsteps of the Jiang family fading away, his handsome brows slightly furrowing.
While returning home, he overheard someone mentioning that Jiang Er would be living next door. At first, he didn't believe it. After all, the neighboring thatched huts had been abandoned for over a decade. Weathered by years of wind and rain, they were on the verge of collapsing and unfit for habitation.
To his surprise, Jiang Er actually brought his family and settled there.
Lu Lizhi had never interacted with Jiang Er before. All he knew was that Jiang Er had a notorious reputation in the village for being a troublemaker and frequently stealing chickens and dogs.
As he thought about the situation, Lu Lizhi's gaze turned slightly cold as it landed on the shared wall with the neighboring house.
A hole had been dug at the base of the wall, presumably by a thief attempting to break in. However, Lu Lizhi had scared the intruder away by jabbing at them with a bamboo broom, ensuring they never returned.
Now, as Lu Lizhi examined the large hole, he searched for something to seal it shut.
Suddenly, a laugh echoed from above him.
"Hey, you don't expect me to crawl through this tiny hole, do you?"
Jiang Baiye gazed at the young man on the other side of the wall in disbelief, finding it slightly amusing. The young man had a distinct and androgynous face, devoid of any feminine features, emanating a distant and aloof aura that seemed to keep others at a distance of thousands of miles. Jiang Baiye's sudden appearance and the sharp sound he made caused the young man's thin lips to purse tightly, accentuating his exquisite beauty.
Undoubtedly, the male protagonist stood out effortlessly with his posture and demeanor, easily catching the attention of any onlooker in a crowded place.
"If I want to accomplish something, I'll simply climb over the wall," Jiang Baiye remarked with a smile, swiftly descending from the wall just as the other person was beginning to grow vigilant.
Indeed, the wall was quite tall, exceeding two meters in height, making it a challenging feat for people in ancient times, where the average male height was less than 1.7 meters.
However, Jiang Baiye's physique, perhaps to align with the character design of a village tough guy, stood at an imposing eight feet tall, equivalent to over 1.85 meters in modern times. Coincidentally, this height was similar to his own in the modern world.
Not only were their heights identical, but their appearances matched perfectly as well, with only slight ruggedness and a wheat-colored complexion. It came as no surprise that some villagers found him intimidating.
Jiang Baiye couldn't help feeling a bit disheveled due to his physical condition.
Once inside the house, Jiang Baiye reached his limit, gripping his violently churning stomach and his face paling.
"Jiang Er!" Both couples, who were just moments ago frustrated and unsure about the future, jumped in horror. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
"Hungry..." Jiang Baiye reluctantly managed to utter, "Mother, please cook more rice, and father, clean the house quickly."
As his parents became anxious and busied themselves with their tasks, Jiang Baiye sought out a relatively clean spot to sit, leaning against the wall to alleviate the pain.
The original owner's parents had their fair share of issues, otherwise they wouldn't have tolerated the presence of the villainous cannon fodder like the original owner. However, since Jiang Baiye had lived an entire lifetime in the original owner's body, he was determined to bring about changes for both his parents and the rest of the villagers.
If he wanted to survive in the feudal ancient society, the bitter experience of the previous life taught him that reputation is very important, and without fame, it will be difficult to move forward.
Just found this! Looking good
