After the tragic death of the village tyrant
~
During the spring plowing season, as the land warmed up and nature awakened, the valley flourished with vibrant greenery, accompanied by the cheerful melodies of warblers and the lively chirping of birds perched on the budding branches. Scattered across the mountainous landscape, clusters of villages could be found, with Qingshui Village residing in the southernmost part of Xuanhe Province.
Qingshui Village consisted of nearly two hundred households, the majority of whom relied on farming for their livelihood. At present, half of the households were diligently engaged in agricultural activities, tending to the soil, harvesting wild vegetables, and bustling around with a sense of prosperity.
In the midst of this scene, a tall and thin figure stumbled towards the village from a distance. As several sharp-eyed village women caught sight of the figure, they grew startled and swiftly shielded their baskets of gathered wild vegetables.
"It's that kid from the Jiang family again!"
The others quickly grasped their hoes, determination etched on their faces. "Let's see if he dares to come any closer..."
Before their words could even fully escape their lips, the figure collapsed with a resounding thud!
Jiang Baiye experienced an incredibly lengthy dream.
Within this dream, he lived as a virtuous young man in the 21st century, hailing from a prosperous medical family and pursuing his studies as a graduate student at a prestigious university. From a young age, his passion lay not in playing games but in designing them. During his college years, he assembled a team of senior students from the computer department and established a game studio.
After years of relentless dedication, Jiang Baiye's independent games achieved significant popularity in both domestic and international markets, bringing him considerable success and serving as the foundation for his entrepreneurial aspirations. Just as he was on the brink of showcasing his talents and creating even more sophisticated games, tragedy struck. He sacrificed his life while rescuing a young girl trapped in a fire, and he never emerged from that fateful incident.
However, it was this honorable version of himself that became the subject of malicious gossip and transformed into a notorious bully within the confines of a fictional ancient dynasty.
Children from all corners trembled in fear at the mere sight of him, hastily seeking refuge in their parents' embrace.
Jiang Baiye, perplexed and attempting to explain, found his words falling upon deaf ears. Over time, he bore the blame for every misfortune that occurred—whether it was stolen chickens from the village, the elopement of Lao Wang's wife, or Li San's broken leg. All of these events were attributed to Jiang Baiye.
The situation escalated to the point where, at the age of nineteen, the people of a neighboring village suddenly lodged a report with the authorities, demanding his arrest and imprisonment.
Deprived of any opportunity to present his case or seek justice from the authorities, Jiang Baiye found himself mercilessly beaten to death by a mob of enraged villagers, brandishing sticks. The brutality inflicted upon him was so severe that even his body was left disfigured and unrecognizable.
In his final moments, Jiang Baiye experienced a profound sense of injustice, resentment, and an unwillingness to accept his cruel fate. He couldn't comprehend why someone who had never caused harm or harbored ill intentions towards others would meet such a tragic end.
With the reawakening of his modern memories, Jiang Baiye came to realize that he not only bore the brunt of it all but also served as the sacrificial lamb in a particular anti-imperialist novel titled "The Rise of the Powerful Official," which he had previously read. Every misdeed and unfortunate event meticulously orchestrated within the narrative was attributed to his villainous cousin.
His cousin's actions included stealing chickens, severing limbs, and even kidnapping other people's spouses. Yet, it was Jiang Baiye who shouldered the blame for these transgressions. Along his journey, he was ambushed by his villainous cousin, who wielded a knife intended not only for him but also for Lu Lizhi, the clever and resilient protagonist of the novel.
However, Jiang Baiye had transformed from the notorious village bully depicted in the original book. He was no longer easily provoked into fights or coerced into mistreating others, realizing the pitiful nature of a lonely, cold, and mute boy who suffered even more than himself.
As his incredibly intricate dream drew to a close, a piercing cry echoed in his ears. The voice lamented, "...my son, my miserable son! How could you leave your mother behind and go off alone!"
"My son, wake up quickly! Look, your father is here, and the doctor will arrive soon..."
Jiang Baiye was overwhelmed by the noise, experiencing a throbbing headache and a sense of confusion regarding his current circumstances. Could it be that he had been granted a new lease on life?
Yet, instead of returning to his previous existence, he found himself reborn into a different life. He deeply longed for his parents and the old man who had played a significant role in his life. Jiang Baiye understood that his demise must have inflicted a profound and devastating blow upon them.
If given the opportunity, Jiang Baiye would have chosen to go back in time and spend more precious moments with his parents.
However, as he opened his eyes, he was greeted by the sight of two tear-stained faces, pale and gaunt from prolonged hunger and malnutrition. They were overjoyed and relieved to see him awaken.
Jiang Baiye's voice trembled as he choked out, "Father, mother..."
They were also the parents with whom he had shared a lifetime, who had raised him for nearly fifteen years. Although their quirks made them a little unconventional, their love for him was undeniable. "My son, you're finally awake! You frightened your mother to death!"
Curious about the time, Jiang Baiye scanned his surroundings and was slightly taken aback to find himself in the familiar home of Old Jiang.
"It's morning," his mother replied, her voice filled with concern. "You fell from the ridge in the field. That old man refused to give you any food and instead sent you to dig wild vegetables. He's such an old scoundrel..." Before she could finish her sentence, her mouth was abruptly covered, and Jiang Dazhu, standing beside her, wore a stern expression. "What are you shouting about?"
Jiang Baiye also hurriedly diverted the subject, "I mean, what year is it?"
He was in a province named Daning that had never been in any historical record, and the reigning emperor ruled the period of Yongshun.
"Yongshun, thirteenth year, are you alright, son?"
His father reached out and touched his forehead, and Jiang Baiye wanted to say that he fainted from hunger, but he only asked, "Have you separated from the family yet?"
The faces of the two sank, "Don't worry, our family will always have its rightful place. No one else can take it away from us! As long as we refuse to admit any wrongdoing, let's see what they dare to do!"
However, just as they were speaking, the door was violently kicked open, causing Jiang Dazhu to startle and instinctively hide behind He Shi.
Jiang Baiye remained composed as his forehead veins twitched. He turned his gaze towards the source of the commotion and saw Old Man Jiang, the family member with the highest authority, standing outside the door, casting a disgusted look at him.
"Leave! Get out of here! The family has already disowned you, so don't even think about staying!"
"Father..."
