After the tragic death of the village tyrant

~

As soon as the old man Jiang saw this soft egg of a son, he became furious, "Take your useless son and get lost!"

Jiang Dazhu barely dared to protest, but before he could act, He Shi grabbed hold of him.

Her eyes turned red with anger, and she longed to curse, but she was also afraid of the repercussions. She couldn't afford to offend anyone to the point of no return.

Just as she clenched her teeth and prepared to kneel down, a pair of hands firmly and resolutely supported her from behind.

"Mother, let's leave," Jiang Baiye calmly suggested. The sight before him was all too familiar. In his previous life, his mother had knelt on the ground, kowtowing countless times, yet it had failed to soften Old Man Jiang's heart.

This was not the first time such a scene had unfolded; it had become a recurring occurrence.

Old Man Jiang cynically curled his lips, showing no surprise. This second grandson possessed neither skills nor a mild temperament.

Yesterday, he had sworn to gather wild vegetables and return, yet here he was, feigning illness and being lazy. Old Man Jiang was curious to see what other tricks he had up his sleeve.

"Son..." Facing her son's rare intervention, He Shi felt a little uncertain. She wanted to refuse based on reason, but her son, whom she had conceived and given birth to, was her everything. She couldn't bring herself to turn him away.

Jiang Baiye directed his gaze at the old man Jiang, who held a withered smoking pipe. "What about the grain and silver that were meant for our share?"

Old man Jiang displayed a knowing expression and snorted, "So this was your idea. If you're so capable, don't rely on us for anything."

"And why not?" Jiang Baiye found it amusing. His stern eyebrows and cold eyes carried a hint of hostility that actually made Old Jiang's heart skip a beat.

"It rightfully belongs to us, so why shouldn't we claim it?"

He was unaware why things unfolded so differently in his previous life, why he had lost his memories of his original world, leaving him with a fragmented mind and a sense of emptiness. He had also been influenced by certain elements from the book, leading him to live a hazy and aimless existence, manipulated by others without realizing the truth.

He had invested significant effort for the Jiang family, yet he was deprived of any recognition.

Although his father was indolent and slippery, his mother was a resilient woman. She toiled in the fields all day long for the sake of her son.

Without her dedicated efforts, and with more than a dozen acres of land at their disposal, along with his uncle working as an accountant in town and his cousin attending school, who would take care of the household chores for the family.

In this country, taxes were light but labor obligations were demanding, and the income from farming was substantial. However, it seemed that neither his uncle nor his cousin spent any money from their own pockets. Most of it was allocated for his cousin's education expenses. Consequently, the burden of taxes fell entirely on their second household.

Previously, his father had been evicted for several years before returning home. And this year, the imperial court planned to construct canals across various states and counties. It required arduous labor, and those who couldn't endure it would perish. His grandfather intended to register Jiang Baiye's name.

However, his parents were solely focused on ensuring his success as a scholar. Naturally, they rejected the idea and insisted on separating from the family.

As a result, the pressure from Dazhu's family compelled old man Jiang to take action. He chose to create a division within the family and resorted to threats. According to him, they were like a toad coveting the meat of a swan. He belittled Jiang Baiye as an illiterate waste who couldn't comprehend advanced literature and harbored unrealistic aspirations for education, asserting that such incompetence had no room for opportunities.

As time passed, the entire village enjoyed mocking them and pointing fingers, causing Jiang Baiye's reputation to deteriorate further.

Impatiently, Old Jiang tossed them a bag of spoiled sweet potatoes, half a bag of black rice, low-quality elm skin noodles, and a meager sum of two hundred wen. These items had been prepared long ago.

Jiang Dazhu, always fearful of his wife and father, trembled as he observed the rotten sweet potatoes, black rice, and poor-quality noodles. The two hundred wen seemed like an offering for a beggar. His lips quivered.

"Father, considering all that we have done for this family over the years, you once promised that if Yueming passed the exam, we would follow suit. We were even willing to cover the school fees. We haven't saved much money, and now that we have separated, don't you think it's fair to return our rightful share?"

Upon hearing this, the expression on Old Jiang's face turned grim. "You want money to support your indulgent lifestyle all these years? I had to clean up the mess caused by this useless person!"

"My son hasn't done anything wrong! I've said it before, he's a good man, not worthless!" He Shi's anger was evident as tears streamed down her face, making it difficult for her to speak.

Jiang Baiye quickly came to her side, providing support and offering soothing words. He had no intention of engaging in pointless arguments with this biased grandfather.

"What about the house? What about the fields? How should we divide the chickens, ducks, pigs, and cows that were raised by the family?"
