Managing a Big Bowl of Rice

~

Jiang Baiye was abruptly awakened from his drowsy state by He Shi. He eagerly devoured two large bowls of rice without minding its aged quality or poor taste. The satisfaction on the faces of the family of three was evident.

"It's been so long since I've had such a filling meal, hiccup~" Jiang Dazhu, satiated and content, felt the urge to lie down on the bed.

"Father, let's clean the house together," Jiang Baiye interjected. The previous task assigned to him had not been completed satisfactorily. Rubbing his stomach, the lingering hunger gradually subsided. He grabbed a broom and attached it to a bamboo pole, sweeping away the cobwebs and dust within the house.

Now that the entire village had their eyes fixated on their family, eagerly waiting for them to stumble or reveal an unsightly side, Jiang Baiye, awakened with memories from the modern world, paid no attention to the judgments of these people.

To escape the unfortunate destiny of being a mere cannon fodder and instead lead a prosperous life in this new world, Jiang Baiye knew he couldn't afford to be idle like in his previous life.

After cleaning up a kitchen, two south-facing bedrooms, a main room, a grocery storage, a cowshed, and half of the hut, Jiang Baiye noticed numerous cracked and sagging walls. It was no wonder that in his past life, these houses had collapsed due to rainfall. Urgent repairs were necessary, and he had to find a solution quickly.

Moreover, the dry thatch that covered the roof crumbled upon touch, with debris threateningly falling from above, creating an atmosphere of precarious living.

Jiang Baiye then directed his attention towards the few chickens and the dog he had brought along, ensuring their temporary settlement.

Big Yellow, a large hybrid canid, had been a lone companion since Jiang Baiye picked it up and personally hand-fed it. With its quick reaction speed and strong attacking abilities, it would have been considered a qualified police dog from a modern perspective.

Little Red, on the other hand, was a sick rooster that Jiang Baiye had rescued from someone else's house. Instead of burying it, he nursed it back to health, resulting in a robust and combative physique. On one occasion, when he brought it to town, a man offered to buy it for three silver taels.

Naturally, Jiang Baiye refused the offer, but he took advantage of the man's influence and decided to participate in a cockfight. Surprisingly, he emerged victorious, earning a few more taels of silver in the process.

As a consequence, his cousin witnessed the incident and immediately reported to Old Man Jiang that Jiang Baiye had stolen the money. A group of people seized the opportunity to take the "stolen money" from him, claiming they would return it to its rightful owner. They even went as far as giving him a beating to teach him a lesson, which in hindsight was their own ignorance.

However, Jiang Baiye wasn't entirely foolish at that time. He secretly hid a tael or two on his person, along with the four hundred Wen given to him by his family, which provided him with some level of confidence.

Lost in his calculations, Jiang Baiye realized that the day had passed without his awareness.

The following day, he rose early in the morning. First, he fed some broken rice to the family of Little Red, consisting of a plump, reed-colored chicken and five adorable chicks. Then, he gave Big Yellow two tablespoons of leftover food from the previous night and himself ate two bowls of porridge.

Turning his attention to the main house on the left side of the hall, where his parents resided, Jiang Baiye inquired, "Father, didn't I ask you yesterday to remove the weeds and stack the chopped wood by the door?"

After some time, even He Shi rose to have breakfast, yet Jiang Dazhu remained motionless. Jiang Baiye entered the main room, approached the bed, and stared at his father for a while.

"Ah!" Jiang Dazhu was startled by the cold atmosphere, and upon realizing it was his own son, he could hardly believe it. "Jiang er, what are you doing?"

"Get up and assist me with the work. This house is uninhabitable. We need to demolish it and construct a new adobe house using yellow mud."

"We should also reclaim the half-acre wasteland in the back as soon as possible. We can take advantage of the spring plowing season and cultivate some nutritious rapeseed flowers. When they are tender, we can consume them as vegetables, and when they ripen, we can extract oil from them. Let's consider planting corn, wheat, and other fruits and vegetables. Otherwise, what will we eat in the future?"

Jiang Dazhu gazed at Jiang Baiye as if he didn't recognize him, and mumbled, "What's the hurry? We can always go back and persuade them to provide us with supplies."

He further advised, "What's the point of farming? You should focus on your education and grow up! Trust in your father. Once they calm down, I will go and plead with your grandfather. Your uncle and cousin are reasonable people, they will surely help us."

Here it goes again, just like in the previous life. Jiang Dazhu couldn't recognize the true nature of those individuals and still believed in the bonds and affection within the family, but in the end, it all turned into a mockery.

In response to this, Jiang Baiye also approached He Shi and clarified the situation, saying, "I don't know how to study, nor do I possess any talent. Considering our current circumstances, it is not practical to invest the time, energy, and expenses required for examinations. It is simply unrealistic."

Jiang Baiye, coming from modern times, was considered a good student and shouldn't be afraid of the imperial examinations. However, his expertise lied in science and engineering, causing him distress when it came to subjects in the liberal arts. In this world, literary skills held greater importance than scientific knowledge, and Jiang Baiye disliked the formulaic writing style that was expected.

In comparison to the ancient individuals who dedicated their entire childhood to preparing for the imperial examinations, Jiang Baiye had no advantage whatsoever. Even his cousin, who was a well-known scholar, couldn't surpass the level of a Xiucai, an individual who passed the county level imperial exam. Therefore, Jiang Baiye didn't want to end up like Fan Jin, who achieved success in his fifties and remained idle for the rest of his life.
