Buying delicacies and preparing chicken soup for the soul
~
After stir-frying the vegetables, he proceeded to cook a large pot of rice and half-steam the cured duck legs. With everything prepared, Jiang Baiye was fully ready. He began by filling the most abundant bowl in the house with rice. Then, he carefully sliced the cured duck leg meat into thin slices and placed about five or six of them on top of the rice. He garnished it with finely chopped greens using a chopstick. As for the chicken soup, he selected the best chicken thighs and wings, stewing them until they were tender but not overcooked. A generous bowl was filled with mushrooms, green onions, and red dates. The combination of red, yellow, green, black, and white colors created a visually appealing dish that was not greasy or oily, but rather incredibly sweet and delicious. Finally, two additional dishes were arranged on a small plate, reminiscent of modern Chinese fast food. Even with a simple plating, Jiang Baiye's touch added a touch of charm and interest to the presentation. Jiang Baiye indulged in his own narcissistic thoughts, convinced that his sincerity was irresistible, even though there was a high chance of rejection. Meanwhile, next door, Lu Lizhi's expression turned sour as he caught a whiff of the enticing aroma wafting from Jiang's house. A sense of foreboding settled over him. After thoroughly searching outside, he confirmed his worst fear: his prized possession and only chicken had disappeared. In the midst of his racing thoughts, a knock resounded on his door. When there was no response, the persistent caller escalated their efforts and brazenly shouted, "Lu Lizhi, come out! I know you're in there. If you don't come out, I'll climb over the wall and enter myself!" Lu Lizhi swiftly rose from his chair, feeling the audacity of this person. They were truly arrogant. He hurriedly made his way to the bedroom, retrieving a sheathed dagger hidden beneath the bed board and concealed under a pillow. The last time he had wielded this dagger, he had severed a man's little finger as punishment for humiliating his father. Little did he expect that he would have to use it again so soon. Lu Lizhi unsheathed the dagger, pursed his lips, and stepped towards the door, assuming a defensive stance. With thoughts of Jiang Er's imposing figure in his mind, he braced himself and swiftly opened the door, only to be met with the smiling face of a handsome individual. Jiang Baiye's smile widened slightly upon seeing Lu Lizhi's presence. The towering figure of the young man almost dominated the entire view, yet his expression turned serious and apologetic as he looked at Lu Lizhi. "I deeply regret the loss of your chicken," he sincerely conveyed. In an instant, the peculiar feeling that had surrounded Lu Lizhi vanished, replaced instead by a sense of disgust that emanated from his eyes, clearly conveying his rejection of Jiang Baiye. However, Jiang Baiye couldn't help but find those eyes captivating, as if they held a radiant spark of light, if only they didn't harbor such intense animosity towards him. He let out a soft sigh. "This is your compensation, although words alone can't undo what has happened." Lu Lizhi glanced at the rough money bag that was offered to him. It felt heavy even without taking it in his hands, certainly worth more than the value of a single old chicken. But he couldn't help but suspect some kind of deception. Especially as his gaze shifted to the tray in Jiang Baiye's other hand, which displayed a large bowl of fragrant chicken soup accompanied by the tempting aroma of several other dishes, enticingly rich and satisfying. Comparing it to his meager meals of only two a day, with a solitary egg for breakfast, and now even the hen that laid that precious egg was gone... This person undoubtedly did it intentionally, to flaunt and deliberately provoke him! Lu Lizhi gripped the knife handle tightly, his restraint barely keeping him from delivering a blow to that smiling face of his. But in that moment, the young man extended the large tray towards him and cleared his throat. "I'm not sure if this will suit your palate, but it was prepared specifically for you as a form of compensation." Lu Lizhi was momentarily taken aback, his expression growing more cautious. What is this person's motive, repeatedly doing these things... "Whether you believe it or not, I bear no ill will towards you. If you treat me with a little more care and utilize your intelligence, you won't find it difficult to understand," he stated, hoping for a response. Observing Lu Lizhi's silence, Jiang Baiye placed the money bag on the tray and gently rested it beside the doorstep. "By the way, if you have anything to communicate, you can write it down and pass it to me." Without waiting for Lu Lizhi's reaction, Jiang Baiye stood up and departed. His hunger intensified, especially for the delicacy he had prepared himself, of which he hadn't even taken a single bite. Lu Lizhi watched his brisk and upright figure retreat, his gaze shifting to the tray on the ground. After some time had passed, just as he was about to squat down to attend to something, a figure approached him. "Lu Tongsheng..." For some inexplicable reason, he hastily withdrew his hand and looked at the unsettled woman standing before him. "I stole your chicken... The wrongdoings I committed, I cannot let Jiang er bear them on my behalf. If I were like his cousin, I wouldn't be fit to be a mother anymore." He Shi mustered enough courage this time, her face reddening with embarrassment. As a woman of her age, bowing her head before a junior who could even be her son, she deeply regretted her actions and questioned whether her mind had been addled by some unknown force to behave in such a manner. Lu Lizhi remained unfazed. While he didn't know the identity of the chicken thief, he was certain that Jiang Er had no chance to commit such an act. He had been discreetly observing the person's every move. "You can hold me responsible. This dish was meticulously prepared by him. Give it a taste, don't let it go to waste..."

[T/N]: Aww, the mom did the right thing. But I still pity the ML, his only chicken got stolen, although the MC compensated him. Do you think he will use that money and buy himself another chicken?
Maybe they can let him join their meals. 😍
